SPS and Community Internships

Career Quest is a Seattle Public Schools (SPS) Internship program. Students can earn high school credit outside of their school day while exploring careers for their futures. These internships and jobs help students gain valuable experience to prepare them for future success. The Career Quest program connects students to credit-earning opportunities in two ways:

Do you have a job or internship or will have one soon? Great news! You can earn up to 1.0 CTE credits for work and internship experiences. To participate, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Students must be at least 16 years old
  • Students must have a job or internship

To enroll in this program, students must complete the following:

  • Complete the Learning at Work interest form below
  • Complete the enrollment packet and return to your CCLC

To complete this program, students must complete at least 180 hours in one school year for 0.5 CTE credits or 360 for 1.0 CTE credits. Hours will not count until your enrollment has been approved.

Summer Career Quest Internships provide students with career exploration and development opportunities.  Student interns will work closely with their internship host to discuss solutions and ideas while developing problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, presentation and networking skills. Students participate in a wide range of workplace activities to gain skills and knowledge for specific occupations, while being supported by weekly career development class time with a Seattle Public Schools Career Quest teacher.

The application deadline for all Career Quest opportunities is April 23, 2025 at 5PM:

Career Quest Summer Internships $20.76/hour

Intern in business and marketing or construction/construction management!

  • Who: All SPS students who will be 16 years old by July 8, 2025

Finance Quest (Amazon Periscope)$400 stipend (2 weeks)

Future accountants, managers, marketing majors and more can learn about the innerworkings of Amazon’s business model.

  • Who: Current 10th graders
  • Dates: July 28- August 8, 9am-3pm (Monday through Friday)
  • Location: Amazon Campus (South Lake Union)

Science Quest (Allen Institute) – $500 stipend (2 weeks)

In this unique class, students will participate in advanced lab activities, leaving with increased confidence in biomedical science research and data. Students will generate, analyze, and interpret scientific data and gain exposure to neuroscience, cell biology, and immunology. 

  • Who: All SPS students who have completed a biology course
  • Dates: July 14-July 25, 9:30am-3:00pm (Monday through Friday)

Tech Quest (Amazon)– Paid

Tech Quest at Amazon is a 2-week summer program for SPS high school students to explore technology careers of the future. You can expect introductory coding, project based learning and Amazon career guest speakers.

  • Who: All SPS students, with focus on current 9th and 10th graders
  • Dates July 21-August 1, 10am-3pm (Monday through Friday)

Curious about public health and what your local health department does? Join Seattle and King County Public Health to explore STEAM career paths in health care with hands-on learning opportunities alongside public health professionals. Students will meet nurses, research scientists, epidemiologists, health educators, program managers, and more.

Changemakers in Computing (CIC)

Changemakers in Computing (CIC) is a 4-week free summer program for Washington State high school students to learn about technology, society, and justice. Hosted by the University of Washington’s Allen School, Changemakers in Computing aims to increase the participation of underrepresented, economically disadvantaged, and/or future first-generation college students in computer science and engineering. The program is open to all rising juniors and seniors at Washington State high schools.

High School Summer Research

The Allen School High School Summer Research Intern Program is an opportunity for high school students to engage in research being done in the Allen School. Interns will spend about 8 weeks working on a project under the supervision and support of a research mentor. We encourage students who do not have much programming experience or any research experience to apply for the program. We will use the information about background knowledge provided in the application to find the best project match for applicants based on project requirements and applicant experience.

The program is open to all rising junior and senior high school students in Washington state. Applications for the High School Summer Research Internships will open on March 1st and close on March 31st. For more information please check our Frequently Asked Questions page.

Enroll in an Allen School Summer Course

U.S. high school students can earn college credit by taking courses at the University of Washington during Summer Sessions! To be eligible, you must have completed eighth grade or its equivalent by June 30, 2024. You can find the list of Allen School summer courses on our CSE Time Schedules page. To register for Summer Sessions as a high school student at the Seattle campus, follow the steps on the Summer Sessions page.

One full-time, paid internship is offered to a high school student who has completed their junior or senior year. For 4 weeks, this student will have an opportunity to tour construction sites, attend team meetings and work in a professional environment. Over the course of the month, a portfolio of the intern’s work will be assembled and will culminate in a brief presentation on their last day. Transit expenses to get to our studio are covered.

Position Summary

The Camp Aide will ensure smooth camp programing by providing support to classroom educators and camp location site leads as directed. This position upholds our mission to provide safe, interactive, week-long STEM camps for school age children to spark lifelong curiosity, significantly enhance the participant’s experience and expand Pacific Science Center’s role as a driving force for informal science education. The Camp Aide position will focus on two areas of operations: classroom management and supply inventory.

Accounting Career Awareness Program

WA state students can now apply to ACAP Seattle’s free Summer 2024 Residency Week Program for WA high schoolers!

he Accounting Career Awareness Program is pleased to invite applicants from WA state high school students of color to its Summer 2025 Residency Week program at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business. Our mission is to help underrepresented students realize academic and career opportunities in accounting and business.

This free, week-long residential program for rising WA state high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors introduces participants to accounting and the many opportunities offered in a career field actively seeking to diversify its workforce. Participants reside on campus, learn in and out of the classroom, visit accounting firms, build valuable life skills, and network with other students and diverse professionals while enjoying a taste of campus life.

This program is 100% free and includes housing in campus dorms, food, and all activities.

Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle

Who: 18 to 24 year old students (graduating seniors welcome to apply!)

What: A paid internship that connects young adults to permanent employment opportunities in the maritime industry. Participants get paid an hourly stipend, enjoy case management and employment support as well as resume building and networking opportunities.

Who: Current 10th grade students who are able to commute to downtown Seattle

What: Starting in 2025, the Research Training Program (RTP) is expanding into a two-year, in-person program with scaffolded experiences to introduce high school students in grade 10 to laboratory research. *Note that activities for the 2025-2026 school year and summer 2026 are contingent on available funding.  

  • Summer 2025: During the Research Training, students will:
    • Learn how to work in a research laboratory environment at Seattle Children’s Research Institute.
    • Learn about topics including biochemistry, immunotherapy, gene editing and infectious diseases.
    • Participate in workshops on college readiness and career exploration.
    • Conduct their own independent project utilizing the skills they have learned.
  • 2025-2026 school year: Students will participate in monthly workshops (in-person and virtual) on topics in Science Communication.
  • Summer 2026: During the Research Experience, the trained students will return to work directly alongside research mentors in laboratories at Seattle Children’s Research Institute.

The program provides students with a solid foundation for a future career in biomedical research. Students who participate must commit to participating in all planned activities of the Research Training Program from July 2025 to August 2026.

Students will receive stipends to offset costs for transportation and meals: $2,000 for summer 2025, $200 during the 2025-2026 school year and $2,500 for summer 2026.

When: Applications are due March 9, letters of recommendation are due March 30, and in late April to early May students will be notified of acceptance.

The research training program will take place from Monday, July 13 to Friday, August 14, 2026, from 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m. daily.

What: We are offering local high school students the opportunity to participate in our free Scrubs & ’Scopes Camp at Seattle Children’s. During this five-day camp, students will explore various allied health careers by job shadowing medical assistants, pharmacists, laboratory scientists and technicians/technologists in Pharmacy, Radiology, Surgery, Sterile Processing and Anesthesia in a clinical environment, observing as they provide patient care.

Students will also work through interactive, hands-on simulation labs to learn and practice various skills on models such as taking blood pressure and blood oxygen levels; simulating medication compounding for oral and IV medications; using microscopes; and taking X-rays, among other experiences.

Additionally, students will have the opportunity to engage with allied health professionals to ask questions and discuss various education and career paths.

What: If you are interested in a career in public sector infrastructure (transportation, engineering, planning, computer science, and more), this is the perfect opportunity to gain valuable on-the-job experience, build your resume and work side-by-side with professional mentors!

Work Hours: 8-16 hours per week (up to 40 hours per week allowed during school breaks)

Pay: Students can earn up to $4000 depending on hours and length of time worked

Who: To be eligible, each applicant must be between the ages of 16 and 24 at the start of internship, live in Seattle or attend a Seattle Public School or Seattle College (Seattle Central, North Seattle, South Seattle), and live in a household with income at or below 80% Area Median Income.

What: The Seattle Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is currently accepting applications for our Summer Internship Program.  The Summer Internship Program is a 6-week program, giving youth and young adults in the Seattle area the opportunity to gain practical experience to build their resumes and to make potential connections that may advance their career and/or education. 

Pay: Interns will be paid at the City’s minimum wage of $20.76 and will be provided support in accessing public transportation and stable meal options during internship. 

When: Summer Internship program will start July 9, 2025, and end August 25, 2025

Where: The program will include virtual, in-person, and hybrid activities

What: Uterish is a Seattle-based reproductive justice nonprofit, and we offer a summer internship for self-directed rising juniors and seniors who are passionate about social justice and want to build their editorial and communications skills.

This internship is a great opportunity for students to learn more about social justice, connect with like-minded peers, and develop their professional skills in a collaborative, feminist nonprofit environment. We gladly sign off on volunteer hours, and have coordinated school credit on behalf of interns who have needed it in the past. It is a low-commitment internship (around 5 hours a week) coordinated around the schedule of the interns. Applications are due by March 24th.

Who: Youth must be 14-18 years old and have interest in learning about urban farming and/or wetlands restoration

What: RBYS is a youth employment program of Tilth Alliance for youth, ages 14-18, to gain job experience through wetland restoration and farm education. Participants will work at the Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands and support with field maintenance, food distribution, and wetland restoration.

When: Spring, Fall, and Summer (see website for exact seasonal date ranges)

Where: The farm is located Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands 5513 S Cloverdale Street, Seattle, WA 98118

Pay: Participants are paid $19.97 per hour and receive checks bi-weekly.

What: On-the-job training for crafting beverages and serving the community. Learn new skills to get a job!

Who: Students who are 18 years old and older

Pay: Weekly $225 cash stipend

Who: Urban Native Education Alliance was founded in 2008 to engage generations of Native youth through education, culture, and tradition. This internship 8-10 hours per week during spring semester. The internship will focus on career readiness, college preparation and business planning with tribal leaders and business owners.

When: Tuesdays/Thursdays 5:30-8PM (okay to attend one of two days)

Powerful Voices

Activistas – A social justice program for BIPOC girls and gender expansive high school students. Participants will be engaged in activism, explore issues they’re passionate about, and create a youth-led conference and celebration called Girlvolution.

Who: 14 – 19-year-old BIPOC girls

When: 10 weeks (2/25-5/29)

Compensation: $1600

STG is now accepting applications for the 5th Annual ELEVATE: a showcase of black and brown youth voices uplifting one another through the art of spoken words.

What: Be a Dance Buddy to a neurodiverse or disabled student in an adaptive movement camp. Volunteers will dance, move, ad play with students facilitated by a teacher. They will provide unique support to students to make sure that everyone is safe and engaged

What: Young Women Empowered offers programs in horticulture, writing, and art for teens ages 13-19 in the Greater Seattle area. All of our programs are free to attend and center young women, trans, non-binary, and gender expansive youth. We offer a wide range of topics to explore, but the core themes across all our programs are belonging, wellness, and thriving.

Who: For young women, trans, non-binary, and gender expansive youth ages 13-19. We also offer a summer internship and various community events.

High school students in Shoreline Community College biomanufacturing lab

What: Two pathways to jumpstart a career in biotech. Students gain hands-on training in a biomanufacturing lab, network with industry experts, increase their job opportunities upon completion and earn 9 college credits with free tuition through Running Start. This program can be taken in conjunction with a full-time high school schedule.

  • Pathway 1: Basics of Biomanufacturing Certificate (9 months) – HS students learn basic lab techniques in biomanufacturing, explore careers, and interact with industry mentors – for 11th and 12th graders
  • Pathway 2: Fred Hutch Lab Technician Certificate (2 years) – Expand upon the basics of the biomanufacturing certificate (pathway 1) by collaborating with scientists at Fred Hutch and expanding hands-on training with cutting edge technologies at Shoreline Community College – for rising seniors

Teen Reading Coaches provide one-on-one tutoring after school, two days each week. They help their assigned student readers improve their reading skills, while also being positive role models and mentors: they care about their readers’ success and show empathy and understanding in their work.

Who: Students must live within Seattle City limits or attend schools in Seattle, open to students ages 14-24 with IEP/504 plan and meet income requirements. Students are paid a quarterly stipend and can earn up to $250 in incentives.

Seattle Police Explorer Patch

The Seattle Police Law Enforcement Exploring program aims to bridge the gap between youth and police by educating and involving them in police operations and to interest them in Law Enforcement.

Who: Exploring is for young men and women 14 to 21 years of age with a grade point average of 2.5 or above

When: must attend 2 – 4 monthly meetings in succession.

City of Seattle Fire Department

Young adults seeking a career as a Seattle firefighter can apply to participate in our department’s cadet programs.

Applications are accepted year round. Applications received February 1-July 31 will be notified of selection decisions in August. Applications received August 1-January 31 will be notified of selection decisions in February.

Who:
To qualify for the program, you must:

  • 16 to 20 year old students
  • Be in good physical condition (must complete Cadet Program Physical Ability Test)
  • Meet required attendance expectations
  • Have a strong desire to be a Seattle Firefighter

When: Saturdays, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m

Where: Joint Training Facility (9401 Myers Way South)

Cost: Initial cost of $95.00 and $10.00 per month in membership dues. There are additional fees for special trips and events. Financial assistance is available

What: A variety of opportunities including media arts club, youth advisory council, and a social media internship (paid). Gay City promotes protective factors that support the development and self-determination of LBGBTQ youth.

What: Femme2STEM is a FREE program geared toward serving female-identified BIPOC youth ages 17 – 24 who are furthest from opportunity by assisting them to overcome institutional barriers and racial & social inequities to explore, plan, and ultimately launch careers in STEM
